I have yet to see this rifle nor can I find the photos of it. It is a Model 92 takedown 38-40. I don’t know the serial number but year of manufacture is c1919. Seller said it appears to have been shot very little and the finish is supposed to be 95-97% with a few minor scratches on the stock. The guy wants $5,800 for it. He’s going to bring it by in a couple of days for me to examine BUT I have never purchased or sold a take down and have no idea what these things are worth if in the above-described condition.
Your comments are appreciated. BK

Bert, thank you. Seller is a WACA member and I have purchased some nice rifles from him in the past. On occasion he “steals” from those who sell to him and has passed the savings on to me. But it never hurts to ask those in the know as I know nothing about takedown values. I’ll determine the condition and originality when I see it…I wish I hadn’t deleted the photos sent to me. BK

I don’t see a 95-97% gun in those pics but it’s hard to say given the quality of the pics. He may be able to send them at a higher resolution but that may not help much given the lighting issues. OTOH it’s nice to see somebody besides me that sucks at pictures, mine are generally even worse than his. Looks like a good enough excuse for a road trip for a hands-on inspection. It could very well be exactly as described.

I examined and shot the rifle today! It it’s more like 90-95% than 97%. There is edge wear overall and brown “patina” on the right-top side of the receiver where the pad of my thumb and sweaty palm held it. It can just barely be seen in the poor photo but vividly stands out in natural sunlight…yeh, somewhere between 90-95% blue. (How many times have I handled beautiful firearms indoors only to find them turn to rust once exposed to sunlight?) The rifle, sn 858214, enabled me to shoot better standing offhand than I thought I was still capable of doing. (I’ve grown too accustomed to leaning against trees, posts and using a shooting bench.) The action is crisp/smooth/precise. Perhaps I’m wrong but I figured a takedown in 38WCF in this condition is worth $5,000. He accepted.
Thanks to all because you helped. BK

Sounds like you did well. Congrats and enjoy! 38WCF to boot, nicely done.

You probably did ok on the price even with it being a later gun. I can tell you from experience there arent a lot of TD rifles out there in that kind of condition, especially in the larger calibers. Also, the 38WCF is the rarest as far as TD rifles go, even rarer in certain configurations.
During the 858K SN range I have a number of TD rifles in the survey (15). They all large calibers, about half of which are full magazine.
Im a fan of the 38-40 as far as shooting and hunting. Not all that much different from the 44-40 but many more rare configurations whether standard rifle, or TD variant IMHO.
