I’m sure, like most museums, they make a big deal when selling off collection pieces. Usually through a large auction house and at a premium. But that’s just an opinion and probably wrong.

Like Bert I have never heard of a sale from the Cody collection. But it sure does happen at other museums. Sometimes if they don’t sell it they put it in storage and no one every gets to see it. I have some stuff I will probably donate, not guns, to a couple of museums. They are Indian artifacts found by my Grandfather and Dad. Not worth much but I know exactly where they were found. Most of the stuff out there for sale nobody knows where it really came from.

In the past 20 years, I am not aware that the CFM has ever sold a single firearm. From my limited knowledge, I am not aware that selling firearms from the museum collection is ever on their agenda.

I hope it never will be either. I believe it only hinders and does nothing to help a museum by it selling off its collection.
I do know for a fact that Pieces of the “Winchester Museum” while it was still in New Haven were sold, prior to the collection being moved to Cody. Which I think was a mistake. But in reality, its a miracle that there is a Winchester Museum Collection at all. Prior to the museum being established at New Haven, if it wasn’t for some influential employees the factory was going to merely throw out and destroy the records and prototypes. If that had happened, we wouldn’t have anything close to the knowledge base we have today.
Sincerely,
Maverick

Burt and all:
The Cody Museum did sell firearms back sometime in the 1980s. My wife and I went to an auction the was held on the grounds under a white tent. The firearms auctioned off were duplicates that were in the basement. I bid on a couple 94s but my pockets were not deep enough to win the bid. I remember one 94 that had a consevitive S/N to one that was on display in the museum. Had I of known back then what I know now, I would have sold everything I owned. My wife and I can not remember the exact date but will see if we can find something that will refresh our memory. I know I bought a Madis book at that time. Will check my books to see if there is a date. Dick

The Cody Museum took possession of the original Winchester Museum items in 1976, so selling off a few duplicate items in the 1980s does not surprise me… but it was 30+ years ago that it happened. I have been a CFM member of 20+ years, and No sales have occurred in all that time.

Guys, I do remember some conversation on the Forum in the last 6 years about some sales. Since it appears it did happen, but not probable anymore, my question is answered ! Thanks for all the input.Bill
Bill,
Your memory is faulty… the Cody Museum has not sold any collection firearms in the past 6 years (or for much longer than that).
I would agree with the statement “not probable” , but without the word “anymore”.
