Hello all.  I lurk a bunch and haven’t had a lot of questions so I read along in the forum and have been perusing the magazines but I do have a question.  I believe the Madis’ Winchester book outlines checkering styles A-F and has some grainy images of the styles.  Where can a guy go to see the different styles and more importantly the entire checkering pattern?  Anyone have photos on here of them?

I always see the one pattern out there (sorry, forget the associated letter) but I don’t think I’ve ever seen the others in any sort of quality.  Even when I was in Cody last spring, I didn’t see much in the way of checkered stocks.  Anyone?

Thanks all.  The knowledge base in the forum is truly amazing so I thought I would throw out a harder question.Wink

P.S. Thanks for recommending getting the book and the hints about the Cody Museum.  Those were great suggestions.

Try the Winchester Engraving book by R.L. Wilson.

Also if you don’t have a copy of Winchester’s 1897 Highly Finished Arms Catalog, you’ll need to get you a copy. Cornell publishing has reprints. It shows majority of each style of engraving and checkering offered by the company. But there are a few later patterns not shown in the Catalog.

Pauline will be coming out with a new book in the future that discusses this in great detail.

Sincerely,

Maverick

Thanks, CW and Maverick.  Appreciate the ideas.

I was a little surprised the past issues of the Winchester Collector didn’t have an article on it.
