Several years ago I purchased an 1873 Winchester 2nd Model receiver and lower tang and have been putting this together. I have recently been stuck on the carrier-it wouldn’t go up all the way and it wouldn’t go down all the way. I got in touch with 1873Man off of this forum. I sent him my parts and he identified what was going on.
I have had too many business dealings lately where someone is trying to take advantage of whoever they come across, or maybe I’m just a rube. BUT 1873Man was more than fantastic, helped me out, and now there’s another ’73 Winchester working. When I joined the forum everyone here said this is a great place. I can agree my dealings with the members here, their discretion, and now full on assistance has been invaluable.
Thank you all!!
Sincerely,
Mike

You’re right, Mike. Bob is a valuable asset to this forum and a credit to Winchester collectors in general……reckon we could see some pics of that 1873?

Mike,
Just can’t say enough about Bob. Hope to get to his state sometime and meet him.
Here’s a few pictures. Started with a receiver and octagon barrel and lower tang and all was 44-40. A Cody letter identified it should have had a round barrel and was nothing special. I chose to use it as a blank canvas and build it as if I were to have ordered a new one. I collected original parts, carefully hand-sanded the metal to 800-grit. That took out most of the pitting but not all of it. (After all it isn’t new and wanted to keep some of the character.) Sent parts to Turnbull for the CCH job-awfully pretty. Got a new 28″ oct barrel addressed, full length mag.
Have some crotch walnut waiting to be fitted and checkered and they have a local shop that will do the appropriate bluing on the barrel and mag tube. Teams are competing at Sectionals this week so this will have to wait before being sent out-probably next week.
Cheers!

That’s going to be a beautiful rifle someday soon, Mike. If you don’t mind sharing we’ll all see what a new 1873 looked like back in the day.
Good luck at sectionals, safe travels!
Mike
