I didn’t recall it being 1915/16. Thought it was earlier than that?
Also which model are you referring to?

I’m referring to models 1892/1894. Below is a screenshot of another discussion here that I just found indicating the 1915–1916 date but I was looking for concrete proof, if such exist.

This has been discussed here before regarding the change from case hardened butt plates to blued happened around 1915/1916 but, does anyone have the factory memo or document that specifies this and can post it. Thanks
I do not have, nor have I ever encountered said document.
Based solely on my personal observations, the change from case color finished crescent (rifle) butt plates to the blued finish was a gradual change over the course of several years. Depending on the specific model, it began in 1914 and it culminated just before WW I. It is my belief that Winchester ceased color case finishing all sundry parts (levers, hammers, breech blocks, butt plates, etc.) in the year 1914, but as was usual, those parts were manufactured in very large quantities and it took several years to use them all up.

Thank you for the reply Bert. I’ve always used 1915 as the change date so your info helps and also logical that parts would get used up until depleted. Good info to know if the butt plate on a 92 or 94 rifle with crescent butt plate (pre 1914) is blued.

I think I remember seeing some document, will have to dig to find it. Maybe JWA has it?
