OnlineNeat little rivet press, Tom. I suppose it came in handy for repairing harness and the like. Folks had to be resourceful in those days, or have a kindly neighbor that was. I build a knife kit from Track of the Wolf now and then and a press sure beats a hammer and anvil for rivets!

I think I found what Rick was referring to as far as a rivet press. This belonged to my grandfather, who like I mentioned before was an old horseman. Perhaps this is what he meant when stating he set the rivets by hand. Now if I can just find the jar of rivets, Hmm.
So, that Press, what kind of rivet is it made to press? From what I am guessing from the dimple on the top lug, it would make a rolled over rivet, like a complete circle??? Can you get other attachments for it?

Deg, exactly what do you need as far as your project is concerned? What material do you have now and what do you need? I am willing to do this for you, as long as you’re willing to pay all shipping costs. I’ve been a full-time holster and belt maker for 47 years. I think I have a handle on leather work. However, I need to know in detail what you want done.

OfflineI certainly appreciate that, truly. I had already planned to have you make them for me if I can find the parts and if I fail, and I will pay for work and shipping if I need to lean on you. Let me see how I come along and I may reach out to you if needed. I just ordered a Rex 27 and I did order some of the buckles, but they are a bit larger than I want. I need 3/4″ and all I can find is 1″; I searched and searched. I should be able to come up with the rivets with no problem.
These are the buckles – I really want them in 3/4″ but figured if worse comes to worse I will make 1″ wide belts. The ones I am trying to match are on the Spotting Scope on pages 15 & 16 of the attachment.

OfflineAnd without mentioning any inferior names – I am trying to decide which cap would be the older version. The spotting scopes I am working on were first in production in 1935 and made some changes up to their termination, including no tag at all. These two tags are identical except for one says, “Serial No.” and the other is “Pat. Pend.”. The one with Serial No, the stamping seems more hand done (maybe older) and the Pat Pend appears to be more machined. But wouldn’t Pat Pend come before Serial No???

Let me know f I can help. In my opinion, pat-pend would come before serial number, unless they made some small change after they started applying serial numbers.
Thank you, and I certainly will. I was thinking the same thing, but the number stamping quality makes it appear the opposite to me – I dunno…
