I’m enjoying “Rough Riders” this weekend, could be one of my favorite “Westerns”. Director Milius almost always gets his guns right. I’m enjoying the screen time given the 1895 and the Krag-Jorgensen rifles with more than a few 1894’s, quite a few SAA’s and even a cameo by a Colt machine gun for those of you that swing that way-and that’s just on the U.S. side! I understand Milius was a pretty serious firearm collector at one time. I think the 30-40 Krag cartridge should have been nominated for Best Supporting Cartridge for the work it did in this film, apparently doing yeoman duty feeding the 1895’s and the Krags. Some of my favorite actors were pretty good in this pic as well.
Just realized that was probably why I spent some quality time in my loading room assembling 30-40 rounds today. But now it’s movie time!

I really liked the TV series. I could watch Sam Elliott read the phone book and be entertained. I can actually stand watching Gary Busey in the series as well.
John Milius also directed The Wind and The Lion. I always appreciated the scenes with Teddy Roosevelt in it and the movie in general. The scene with Roosevelt complaining about his newly ordered Winchester rifle is pretty much verbatim from one of his letters written to WRACo.
Milius also did some DVD commentary on The Good The Bad The Ugly that was well done.

Wind and the Lion. Can’t say I’ve seen or even heard of that one. I am impressed with Berenger’s portrayal of TR every time I watch the Rough Riders movie. Watched You Know My name again last night. Not one of my favorite Sam Elliot performance but it was a good tribute to Bill Tilghman, best I can tell they got the guns right in this one too.

You can watch the trailer for The Wind and The Lion above. Its pretty good for Sean Connery not playing James Bond. There are several 95s and 97s being used on screen.

It came out the same year as The Man Who Would Be King.
Sincerely,
Maverick
P.S. It is still hard to beat a good WESTERN!
