I have acquired another 1892 serial number 27774 which is a 24″ octagon barreled hunting rifle in 32-20. Looks like it was made in 1894. All original from what I can tell with perfect wood and a brown finish. My question is about the front sight. Is it installed backwards? Also, there is a screw on each side of the blade. Even though these screws are tight, the blade still fits loosely. Can someone shed some light on this for me?

Cliff,

That is not a factory original front sight.  It appears that a past owner altered (modified) an original sight, using just the original dovetail base to cobble together the rest of the sight.

Cliff, A simple number 21 without the screw would be correct. The height, .360″ or so, depending on the back sight, you may what to shoot it to determine the height before buying. A sight can be bought on Ebay for $125. I think your blade is on backwards, but that’s not the right sight. T/R

That was a lyman 5 that someone removed the globe and used the screws to hold another sight in backwards.

Sure glad I decided to do a full detail and clean on this rifle. Looky what I found? And..I put 50 rounds through it yesterday with no issues. The pivot pin for the lever was also broken in half. Parts on the way from Homestead. If anyone has a spare #21 front sight without the screw that is between .360″-.400″ tall, please contact me. Thanks!

Your firing pin looks a lot like the one I replaced in the 1894 (DOM 1895) I bought in Cody last year. Mine had the tip missing so it wouldn’t go bang at all! May want to call Homestead and see if they have any sights coming in. They seem to have trouble keeping sights in stock but I wonder if they may have inventory not shown on the site.
