I love old guns and I can’t quit buying them, although I’ve decided to sell a few. Meanwhile, I picked up this nice 38-72 and now need to find brass and dies for it. If anyone has any let me know…

I have to thank Rob Kassab for helping me with this gun, he helped me find out it was correct. When it came in, I was in Texas and my dealer described the gun as cut, wrong sights and barrel. You can imagine what feelings I had, when I was too far away to see it myself and with a quick call to Rob, I was assured the gun was right. Thanks again to Rob for your help!

I made my cases from 9.3x74R which are easy to get here in Germany. Of course, .405 Winchester also work perfect.

Actually 405 winchester brass won’t work. The 40-72 and 38-72 were early black powder cartridges and when the 405 Winchester came out, the case dimensions were the same, but they put a thicker rim on the 405, so it wouldn’t fit into the chamber of the 40-72 and blow it up…

You are right, the bolt shoud not close on a gun with correct headspace. You need a lathe for the 405s. But be sure to twist of on the body side.
