i have a buddy got himself a mod. 85 hi wall ser#104716 that’s been re-barreled. I called Cody for a phone check on the ser# and it says 25-20 cal. #3 round bbl.etc. My question is; would that be a 25-20 or the 25-20 s.s. or how would one find out

My guess would be the SS, if WCF was not part of the designation–though I wonder why the record isn’t more specific. Don’t think the repeater cartridge was called anything but .25 WCF by Winchester at that time. But if it’s been re-barreled, is that for the original brl or the new one? Anyway, why isn’t marked on the brl itself?
Has the owner tried to chamber a .25 WCF? Won’t go in, if it’s chambered for the SS cart.
Henry,
If the ledger entry is “25/20” it was a 25-20 S.S. Winchester listed the 25-20 WCF in the Model 1885 ledger records as “25/20 R”, or “25/20 W”, or “25/20 WCF” The 25-20 S.S. was by a very large margin, the more common/popular cartridge in the Model 1885.
