Harry,
The letters on the tang look to be initials. Assemble numbers & serial numbers were stamped farther back on the tang and the font does not look something they used.
The stamp on the stock looks like a coat of arms but there is not enough of it there to make out exactly which one but it look similar to this. What you do is use a strong light at shallow angle to make any shadows stand out and draw what you see. Move the light around from all angles as well.

In order to understand the “Etc.” you are going to have to see a picture of the ledger entry to understand the context of it.

O K Bob thanks for the reply. I’ve tried everything I know on that stock cartouche and that’s the best so far. The coat of arms is ,I’m fairly certain’ the Oil Rivers Protectorate coat of arms. Now what the h— is the Oil Rivers Protectorate and where is it from. The R E H on the musket I also figure are someone’s initials. The “etc.” on the carbine letter, I’ll have to talk to Jessie

I’m guessing that what the stamp is so I just googled “Oil Rivers Protectorate” and these are the first 3 returns.

The cartouche on the ’66 carbine is the Niger Coast Protectorate coat of arms. This leads to a lot of questions also. The Niger Coast Protectorate was established by Great Britain in 1893. One has to wonder where this gun( mfg. 1883), was, up until then and if it was British one would think it would be British proofed, it ain’t. Apparently there was a Governor of the area at the time, and these guns were Probably ordered at His request, but don’t say whether He was British or not. It’s all very interesting. I guess it deserves some investigation. Thanks again for Your help I really do appreciate it.
