I am looking at a small collection of 1885’s and some other things. A couple of questions , how scarce is the 1885 in 38 exp. and an ’85 in .30w.c.f.. On a model 61 smooth bore , how deep does the counter bore go into the barrel. I don’t have pictures at the moment

Henry,

38 Express = 431

30 WCF = 45

I have only ever seen just (1) high-wall rifle chambered for the 30 WCF cartridge.

The Model 62 Smoothbore rifles differ in the counterbore depth depending on when they were manufactured.  There were Routledge counterbore rifles and Winchester counterbore rifles, and then there are some smoothbores with no counterbore.  Michael (2Bit) can provide a much more detailed answer,

If they are reasonable priced, both rifles would be nice acquisitions.  The 38 EX rifle will letter correctly.  The 30 WCF rifle is outside of the letterable serial number range, but it is likely to be factory original.

Can you post (or send me) pictures of the rifles?

I will get some pictures in the next week or so, We are still negotiating, I just had a preliminary look the other day and further inspection would obviously be required. I’ll keep You posted.

On the Model 61 the Winchester counterbore was .265 in diameter and had a depth of 8 inches.
