I read somewhere that Winchester added what was referred to as a ” False Tang” to the first models to address the issue of cracking at the wrist before the second and 3rd models solved the problem. Can anyone elaborate on this or provide proof that such a modification was indeed done by Winchester.
Regards
Don’t know about the “false tang” but the problem didn’t get fixed until the 3rd Model. The second models cracked too. You need to talk to Jim Curlovic. [email protected] He has more Hotchkiss rifles than anyone else I know. If you contact him let us know what the says. I have a 2nd Model military carbine that is not cracked. I have not shot it because I don’t want to be the one that cracked it.
Never did hear back from Jim Curlovic regarding the false tang. I did however find my copy of Herb Houze’s book on the Winchester Bolt Action Rifles and upon reading the section on the first model Hotchkiss did find reference to the “False Tang” along with a photo of same which verified the authenticity of a carbine I wanted and bought at auction.
Thanks for the update, I figured it out when the email bounced back as undeliverable and then found the correct email address in the magazine. I purchased the carbine at auction on Saturday and am awaiting it’s arrival, it looks to be in very fine condition and is one of only 312 commercial carbines made. It will go great with my 1st model sporting rifle which if I am not mistaken is one of a very small number of sporters made as well.
