If a Model 1895 is marked with just “30” or “30 US”, or “30 ARMY”, it is chambered for the 30/40 Krag cartridge.
In answer to your second question, Yes it is safe… as long as the gun in question is in safe shooting condition. The only difference between the 30-03 and the 30-06 is the length of the neck. Shooting a 30-06 cartridge in the 30-03 chamber results in a .046″ bullet jump, and may not be as accurate. This can be overcome by hand loading the 30-06 with heavier (longer) bullets, and seating them out just a bit.
