Given the fact the older 1894 receivers ‘silver’ out; how does that figure into the overall condition- or does it? For instance- if an 1894 has a silvered receiver but the remainder of the gun is 80%- what is the cumulative grade for the gun? Just trying to get better… I guess I need to meet up with some more seasoned collectors and attend some shows with them but that’s difficult at best, given my work and farm schedule.
Technically, the glass is always full; half liquid, half air....

Ron,
I receiver with little or no bluing left on it is generally graded the same regardless of the how old it is. On a pre-WW I Model 1894, the silvered out frame with 80% blue on the barrel and magazine tube is quite common. I personally would grade it at or near 50% overall, with the condition of the stocks bringing it up or down accordingly.

So a rough rule of thumb would be that on those older, gone to silver, 1894s, the receiver accounts for one third of the overall grading- is that about right?
Ron,
That would be really rough rule of thumb in my view. The condition of the receiver is more in the 40-50% range of the total condition.
