A collector friend of mine lives in France and asked what the twist rate was for a 1909 vintage, 25-20 WCF caliber, Model 1892 sporting rifle was.  I honestly did not know off hand.  Pirkle states that is is 1:24 for that SN range but I pulled one my rifles down and marked and slid a rod and patch down the bore and it comes out at 1:14.  Pirkle also mentions that ht twist rate changed 3 times during the production of the Model.  His page 159.  He also states that the 25-20 and 32 WCF carbine barrels only had one twist rate throughout the production run, whereas the 38 and 44 WCF carbine barrels followed the rifle changes.  I welcome your input.  AND…. if you have nothing else to do, and have a few 1892’s please use the method in the link below and tell me what the caliber, SN, and twist rate of your rifles.  Please!!

Thanks

Michael

I have 2 Winchester documents that state the 25-20 WCF to have a 14″ twist. First one is dated 1899, and second one is from the 50’s which states the Models 43, 53, 65 & 92’s in 25-20 all used the 14″ twist. Hope that helps.

Steve,

That is great info.  Could I possible get a scanned copy of those documents?  I would like to eventually be able to use them in a reference book.  The numbers in Pirkle certainly did not make sense to me and my limited knowledge.

The twist rate remained the same for the Model 1885 Single Shot as well… 1:14 for the 25-20 WCF.
