What does an a at the end of the serial number mean? Thanks

I believe the A came in when magazine tubes were threaded into the receiver. I would have to check my books later on. What type of 1886 do you have?

The “A” is not actually a part of the serial number as it is a separate marking.  It does indicate a threaded magazine tube versus a slip in tube.
