I am new to this forum and any forum for that fact so please excuse me as I learn how to do this. I have recently bought a 1873 Winchester musket. The thing that is special is it has 6 marks and etchings into the stock and in front of the receiver, on the wood, that I have researched and found some mean sleep, horse raid, the 4 winds and enemy kills. I believe the US Govt., or some country, has had this gun also due to the elevator having 44 cal. on it but in military block fashion. The gun was made in 1890 so Winchester was marking the elevator in their known inscription. Its a replacement elevator due to the serial # being 368…B I would guess. My question is how and where can I research this rifle? I know most muskets left the U.S. but just wondering if this one stayed in the country and one of the Indian nations had it for some time. If anyone can give me some info/advice on how to research what tribe and or had the U.S. military possibly had this weapon I would appreciate it. Thank you.

Yes’sir the serial # is 368183B. Sorry about that.
If you could post some good pictures of the marks and of the elevator stamping I can point you in the right direction. Since you are not a member you will have to use a third party host site like PhotoBucket or just email them to me and I can post them.

Thank you sir. I am a member but for some reason the site is still seeing me as a guest. I have contacted the site and will see whats going on soon and will get the pictures on the forum. I just want to get some advice before I start researching the possible military side of this musket. I have already sent the pictures to some of the Indian nations to see if I can get some info about all the markings on the stock. Thanks again.
In the next Winchester Collector Mag there will be a article about Indian writing on a 73 I wrote about.

Does anyone have an email or some other means to post some pictures of a 73 I have? Cant figure out how to post to this site. The computer I’m using is old and that is probably the problem. Thank you.

The elevator stamping is not Military markings. They are someones attempt to remark the caliber after the original stamp wore away. As to the other marks on the wood, It does not strike me as Indian but I could be wrong.

Bob,
If its the same article I’m thinking your referring to, I thoroughly enjoyed. I am glad to see that truly is a variable way to prove such Indian Markings.
I remember seeing that gun years ago and thinking that there is no way in hell those are somebody’s initial’s carved into that elevator. Glad to see your research paid off, I also imagined it will help increase or at the very least confirm the gun collectable value.
Sincerely,
Maverick

Looks ok now, just 73_86cutaway.jpg shows in very small box included with credentials

I only see the .jpg identification when I scroll over the photo. Otherwise all that is visible to me is the actual photo/avatar.
