The carrier spring?https://www.gunpartscorp.com/gun-manufacturer/winchester/rifles-win/94-series-win/94-pre-64
No sir, the left cartridge guide on 94’s chambered in .38-55 has a spring/plunger towards the front.
Here are a couple of pictures of my other 94 in .38-55. You can see the spring pretty clearly.
The carrier’s on these are also slightly different in that they have a cutout or “detent” on the left side to clear this spring.

Let’s see if this works

Just to clarify and be absolutely sure, you’re talking about this little guy right here?:
That’s the guy. There’s one for sale on eBay bundled with the cartridge guide. I don’t need the guide and can’t bring myself to spend $75 for both just to get the spring.
I’ve been searching the internet between meetings, but have not found one yet. 🙁 Have you called around to the usual suspects – Homestead. etc?

I’m by no means an expert but as far as I know the spring/plunger and the associated carrier with the curved cutout to clear the spring are unique to the .38-55 and yes, all .38-55’s have them.

I have tried Homestead, but by email only. I’ll call and hopefully I’ll get lucky. I think the larger problem is that it’s not listed or shown as a separate part and most folks don’t know what it is. I asked the eBay seller if he would send me some measurements so I could try to have one made. Here’s what he sent me..
I have spent the morning making calls to:
- Poppert’s
- Numrich
- Jacks First
- Classic Firearms
- Homestead
- Winchester Bob
Unfortunately, I’ve come up empty. I have an email in to the Gun Garage as they don’t take calls on Friday’s and am waiting on Old Arms of Idaho to open. I suspect I will come up empty there as well.
If anyone can recommend someone who could make me a couple of these, I would appreciate it. It literally looks like just a metal strip.

Alaska94, where in Alaska are you?
I’m actually in the coldest part called Virginia :). My first Winchester was given to my dad by a family friend who had a hunting cabin in Alaska. It’s a carbine from 1927 that was in really bad shape. The story goes that it was either won during a weekly poker game or found in the dirt at this cabin. Unfortunately, both gentlemen have passed so the truth shall remain a mystery.
Still figuring out how to post images, so forgive the odd placement of the before and after shots.
It’s interesting, I looked at my 94’s & my 38-55 has the spring & the cutout in the carrier. My 30wcf & 32-40 do not, nor do they have the hole in the cartridge guide. But my 32 special has the cutout in the carrier & the rectangular hole in the guide but no spring. This rifle is all original & I got it from a friend about 10 years ago who had it for at least 20 years. I have not had it lettered yet, but it appears to never have been messed with. Bill

The 32 special configuration is definitely interesting. Could be the 32 round didn’t need the “extra guidance” to chamber that I’m guessing the .38-55’s do.
I wonder if other members with 32 specials have similar setups?

Maybe not. First two I checked in my collection did not have the spring in question so I dug out an early specimen and it does indeed have one. I was beginning to believe the “Due for an appointment” messages from my eye doc.
SN 5310 RB OB spring present
SN 222324 RB OB no spring or cutout
SN 526038 SRC no spring or cutout
If they were only used on early production specimens that may make the search a bit more interesting.

I too went and looked at several post 1905 38 55s and none had the spring or cut out

It seems the transition was somewhere between 1901 and 1904. Interesting.
