As the title states, I’m wanting to purchase an original 1866. Not on the look for a like new crazy high priced 66, just a good survivor that is not missing parts but also shows its age. Feel free to PM if not wanting to leave a reply but just very interested to find one to go with my 73s

also, I’ve not seen a lot of people shoot there original models but if I buy a rifle I want to at least shoot it a couple times. So needs to be shootable shape if I got a hold of some good old stock 44 rounds or made some of those trick rounds with the brass that takes a 22 blank. Thanks

Your best bet if you want to shoot it is with the S&W cartridges that are set up for a blank.  The original cartridges rarely fire.  You just put 2 dents on an expensive cartridge.  Get a S&W 44 SPL case, cut it to length, braze in the primer pocket, then drill an offset hole for the blank.

I fired my 66 round barrel rifle just after I bought it back in the 90’s. I got it at a local gunshow  on Saturday and then bought 4 Dominion rimfire shells from a shell guy at the show for $5 each and that night I fired 2 of them. First one went off on the first hit and the second took 2 hits. This was the first time I shot black powder and when I looked down the bore I couldn’t see the rifling. Sunday I bought the rest of the shells he had. I have shot it since with the modified S&W shells.

I couldn’t imagine walking into a gun show and seeing one, I’ve ran around most the shows from Raleigh over to the mountains in N.C. and have had no luck in ever seeing one, course that’s only been the past couple years. I keep watching waiting for one to hit a price that I feel comfortable buying. Tell myself if I just quit buying 73s eventually I’ll find a 66 and justify the purchase 🤣 I just really want to shoot it even if just a couple times just to have known I shot one

I will be at Tulsa, I know the players and 1866s. If you see something I would be glad to give you an opinion. You will never see more guns in one place in your life. T/R

Shew id love to go to that me and my buddies have talked about going out to some of the bigger shows, being in North Carolina though it would have to be a big planned trip, getting married on the 22nd so that probably isn’t gonna happen this close in time, but damn im hungry for a yellow boy!

Cowboy,

Whats your budget for a 66 and what type of 66 are you looking for? I can tell you is you can buy a rifle cheaper than a like condition carbine.

I’m good with a rifle, really any configuration (besides a musket) is fine by me, don’t want a complete pile of you know what but I’m not looking for a 15-20k collector piece either, I guess I’d say just a shooter grade

I’m definitely interested in getting some. I have thought about them enough I will get one sometime lord willing sooner than later, just want to find that right one that’s a good deal, not holding out for a to good to be true type deal, but one that is a good justified price. I actually sold one of my least favorite 73s earlier this week so that money is going towards a 66, at least in my head it is

gonna watch and see what this one gets up to, looks to be pretty legit? Nothing stands out to me, definitely looks like a old refinish to me but you guys are better at that stuff

Just viewing it quickly I can see the wood at the wrist is not proud and sanded previously but maybe that’s consistent for a 66. And it looks like a Marlin front sight so not Original as described. Might get some other opinions here but not original imo.

That 1866 was originally a SRC as evidenced by the filled staple holes.  The stocks have positively been sanded and refinished, and I suspect the barrel is a replacement.

Kinda what I was thinking also, seeing it’s done up to 3k+ with a week to go I suspect some people are gonna get in a bidding war for it, what would be a good max price in your opinion for it with the refinish and being a src receiver?

The carbine frame used on a rifle is not unusual in that serial range. I have one in the 151,000 range that letters as rifle with the saddle ring holes filled. Winchester did the same with 73’s.

The filled staple holes on 66 and 73 receivers is a normal factory thing. The gun your looking at would not be my choice for a entry level 66, stay original. T/R

Ah I gotcha I did not know that was a factory thing, good to know for future reference, and I see so best to just let that one go on to someone else
