I know…. “good luck”. But if someone out there knows of or has one they’re willing to part ways with, please let me know.

Thanks,

In all my years of looking for them, I have not found one of them (yet). Winchester only made (5) of them in the letterable serial number range, and there is (1) more rifle alleged to exist in the late serial number range.

Wow I had no idea they were that rare… Can you imagine stumbling across one at a big gun show like Tulsa or the Vegas one. Yeezus. Wonder what they are worth.

I think any seller unaware of the rarity would put a price on it below that of the same gun in one of the popular “big-bore” calibers, such as .45-70/90, .50 Ex, etc.  If a high price was put on it because of its rarity, I think it would be a slow sell.  I have one in a relatively scare caliber–.32 WS.  But who’s looking for a .32 WS?  I’d GLADLY trade it for the same gun in .30 US.

If the current owner knows what he has, I would expect his asking price is going to be somewhat inflated. There are at least two “faked” high-walls out there in 33 WCF, one of them has a full octagon barrel, the other a half-octagon barrel. Winchester only made them in a 30-inch Nickel Steel full round #3 size… anything else you might find is not original.

As a side note, all of the various Smokeless powder cartridges with the exception of the 30 U.S (30/40 Krag) are relatively rare. There will be an article that I researched & wrote in the next WACA Collector magazine discussing the Winchester Single Shot (Model 1885) calibers & cartridges.
