I would like to buy some .25-20 ammo and some .38 Special Cowboy load ammo.

Does anyone have some of this ammo that they will sell to me and send to me in San Diego, CA?

I am not sure that is legal since the new ammunition law was passed in CA in 2018.  Cannot ship ammo to San Diego, ammo purchases must be made face to face or shipped to an FFL for transfer.

“As part of California’s continuing war on the Second Amendment, 2018 will see new restrictions placed on the purchase of ammunition. Transfers of ammunition between buyer and seller now need to be “face to face”. Lawful gun owners will eventually need to undergo a background check to purchase ammunition. Background check results along with details of all transactions will be documented in a database maintained by the State.”

How can Cal. law be made to apply to someone living in another state?  Even if the Cal. resident can’t legally accept the shipment, it’s not illegal for the out of state shipper to send it.

I’m not sure where you got the face to face part.  I hope this is true.  Because Nuisance keeps the courts closed this law is in limbo.  The law was thrown out but his majesty was granted a stay (not quite sure of the correct word). He was given around 25 days to appeal.  As far as I know all sales must be through a FFL.

Not to get political, but there’s one Vice Presidential candidate that used to be the CA Attorney General that intends to see her policies nationwide and plays dirty to get her way.

Just saying…

Hi Clarence,

True.  My reason for commenting was simply to point out that the original poster was potentially soliciting, either knowingly or unwittingly, for members on this public forum to aid and abet him in breaking his own local laws.  Whether or not our members have a problem doing that was not the point.  Unless of course the OP has an 01 FFL (which he didn’t mention) and then it is ok.

Sorry, I wasn’t trying to get anyone in trouble with the restrictive California law.

I was just trying to find a source for this ammo, so that I could get a local FFL to buy it for me or have them receive the order for me.

So far, I haven’t found a local ammo dealer that could find this ammo for me.

I do have a friend in Arizona that I visit sometimes. I’ll just have to wait until the next time I go there to see if any gun shops there have this ammo.

My only other alternative is to reload my own which I’ve never done before.

I don’t plan on doing a lot of shooting with my firearms that use this ammo, so that makes a small amount of ammo kind of expensive.

Hi Jampard,

Most of the big online ammo retailers have a function during the checkout process that lets you select a local FFL to ship to when purchasing from CA.

I assume you have checked all of the normal online ammo resources?  It seems 38 Cowboy loads are still available from a few places such as this:

https://choiceammunition.com/product-category/cowboy-action/cowboy-action-38/cowboy-38-special/

The .25-20 is quite a bit harder to find and expensive.  Good luck in your search.

James, it is illegal to buy ammo out of state and carry it across the border.  It is also illegal to have your friend bring it to you.  Ca. also monitors license plates at Arizona gun shows.  They then stop and search you once you cross the state line.  They do this at the major fireworks stand in Vegas too.  Whatever you do, you need to not talk about it.

This is true.  Midway USA will not do this.  That’s why I buy from Brownells.  Midway lies and says they can’t send ammo to Ca.

Jim it is not against the law to buy it.  The seller has to send it to a FFL of your choice.

I ran across an add today.  A guy named Bob Hayley in Tx. says he can supply new formed brass for a very long list of cartridges.  He says he can supply specially cast bullets too.  I don’t know what he means by new??  940) 888-3352.  He says American, British or European.  Also Maynard types, rimfire and pinfire.

Rimfire is what peaked my interest.

Sounds like he may be nearby, I’m in the 940 area code.

I’m in the San Jose area of CA.  I just bought some shotgun shells thru my gun club and I had to show two picture IDs and a copy of my “Certificate of Eligibility” to satisfy the state law.  I also have a bunch of collector ammo, including 25-20 W.C.F., I would like to sell and am stuck with it.

So much for my plans to “sell the stuff” after I retire.  This has become the norm and I guess a lot of my goodies will end up being destroyed instead of being passed on.  Will make it even more rare!  219 Zipper, 50 Exp., 218 BEE, 405 Win., 25-35, 22 W.R.F., etc..  A real bummer!  Roger B
