That may be a hard one to find.  Very few Sporters were made. Maybe around 1,600.  A few are antique but most are post 1898.  The antique ones have an 1895 patent date and the later ones have a 1898 patent date.

Jim, is the 1887 the serial number?  My sporter is 14368. Made in 1902.  Do you have Eugene Myszkowski’s book?

I will be in Colorado Springs this weekend.  I usually see Fred Wardinsky in Denver.  He collects these.  406) 431-8677. rememberthemaine@gmail.com  RemembertheMaine.com

Jim Curlovic  618) 806-4777.  Another person to talk to.

Did you ever contact the 2 individuals I gave you info on?

These guns were in an ever changing environment all through production.  I have sporter and a military musket.  There is not much info on these to be found.

Jim, I have been thinking about your gun.  Can this be a military stock you really need.  I don’t believe the sporters were made in your serial number range.  This serial number is in the 1st Navy contract range.  Maybe you knew this and just like the sporter like I prefer.
