This is a very old post but is this what it looks like?

One of these Noske catalog reprints might help if unsure the exact type of side mount needed. From Michael Petrov’s post above (Thanks for the link Chuck!!!) it looks like there might have been multiple types of Noske side mount and I don’t know if they all used the same base to ring attachment setup. I suspect the catalog would clarify:
I’m sure you saw it but there appears to be a Noske scope on eBay currently. Sadly no mount…
If I see anything I’ll let you know, but in any event keep us posted on your progress with the search. By VERY Model 70 you didn’t happen to mean S/N 6 did you? That’s the only single digit M70 I’ve seen that has a side mount base.
Best,
Lou

FOUR screws? Others I’ve seen had 2 or 3. This must be the paratroop model.

I think if he finds mounts, they’re likely to be attached to a Noske scope. Still, it would be wise, I think, to latch on to this scope now, as it can always be resold if he later finds a mount & scope combination.

yes its #6. recently acquired. was in yearout collection and is mentioned briefly in RR’s book.
Certainly something special. Was it necessary to inlet the stock for the base? What a shame someone separated the scope from the rifle! It’s almost invariable that any detachable part like this gets “lost” somewhere down the line from the original owner.

Yes I agree. Stock not modified. Funny thing is i bought it with a Lyman all weather on a Griffen and Howe mount which leads me to believe it got switched somehow and the scope and mount for my rifle were sold to somebody else. Kinda frustrating.
Did this happen too long ago for there to be any chance of finding out who bought “your” scope? It’s of no use to whomever wound up with it.
Thought it was fascinating to read in the above Double Gun post that the dovetails on some of these mounts were not interchangeable, because each mount/base pair was evidently hand fitted. Which would mean another “top” might not fit your “bottom.”

Hi Thirty-
Congrats on finding S/N 6!!! I’m envious, of course…
I’d heard that it had resurfaced in MT and the little picture of it on Rule’s book showing the serial number shows just enough to see a side mount base. I’ve see photos and in a couple of cases actually handled S/Ns 1, 2, 3, 5, 6 and 9 and S/N 6 was the only one with a side mount. Some of the others have been D&T on the bridge or barrel though. The whereabouts of S/Ns 4 (the one shown in the original M70 “green” brochure), 7, and 8 is unknown to me.
Good luck!!!

Same holds true for Lyman receiver sights, the base/block and slide were also hand fitted and may not be interchangeable with identical model # sights.
If you can’t convince them, confuse them
@ louis…you must know Mr Hale….It might be totally impossible to get this rifle back together with the right scope and mount etc but i have to try. The guy that bought it from the yearout collection said thats the way it was when he got it and he never bothered to try and figure it out. Whomever knew anything about it took it to the grave. It is what it is.
