A new tail or woe or maybe not so new. My rifle letters as follows: Rifle, 45/90,Octagon barrel, Plain trigger, Takedown. Received in the warehouse on December 18, 1894. Shipped from the warehouse on April 3, 1895.
The barrel is 26 inches, has a full magazine, sling rings, hooded front site (Lyman 5-I ), Combination tang peep sight (coarsely knurled post w/ interchangeable disks), rear sight blank and varnished finish. So I conclude that this rifle made a stop at a gunsmith along the way primarily because of the custom sights. The tail of woe-he, the gunsmith, made one other little modification; he shortened the stock and put on a rubber butt pad! Isn’t that sweet? It was customized for a small man or possibly a woman. Given the weight and recoil of the rifle I can’t quite figure that out-oh well. The blueing is 95%+, bore is not pitted and the lever mechanism is tight. For being 122 years old it is a damn fine looking rifle.
So the bottom line is; nice gun….bad stock I need a nice original 1886 butt stock appropriate for condition of this rifle. Operative word here is “nice”, not fancy just nice.
Now that you are done rolling your eyes-any ideas.
Cheers

Good luck! I’ve been looking for the same thing for over a year now. To compound your (and my) problem, what you need is also one of the “old” butt stocks, with the curved toe and the longer length upper buttplate. There is currently one on Gunbroker but it has been sanded and looks short at the toe.

hi, i have one i will sell. email me at [email protected] and i can send you pictures if your interested.
I also have one that I will sell, it is in original condition and has not been sanded, it has the checkered metal shot gun style butt plate and had an original sling eye but is missing. This stock came off an early 1886 in .50 EX.
Email me for pics and price, [email protected]

Have you found a decent 1886 rifle stock yet?
I have a very nice early stock with the curved butt toe.
It appears to have the original plain butt plate and screws, however, I discovered that it was originally made for the trapdoor butt.
It is properly machined under the plate.
The wood is not sanded and is still proud at the plate.
I haven’t figured out how to add attachment pictures so email me:
I am asking $500 shipped with 3 day inspection.
Or, what would you have for a trade? I am partial to sights and other things.
