My husband has medical issues and I need to sell my Winchester 1894. It is in the caliber of 38-55 and has a full octagon barrel. It was manufactured in 1895 and has a 5 digit serial number 25XXX. It is all original and in very good condition. We only take it out twice a year so that it can be cleaned and oiled. Fair offers will be considered.
Please provide the complete (full) serial number so that all interested parties can research it via the Cody Firearms Museum records office if they so desire. Based on the partial serial number you mention, your Model 1894 was actually manufactured in August/September of the year 1897 versus 1895. It would be to everyone’s benefit if you could post a link to clear detailed pictures of the rifle, or provide your email address for direct inquiries.

The full serial number for the Winchester 1894 is 29666. I called Winchester when I first received the rifle over 2 decades ago and they stated to me that serial numbers 14,570 through 44,359 were manufactured in 1895 and that mine was manufactured in early 1895 in the first run; but please feel free to verify with Winchester.

Whomever it was you spoke to, it was not “Winchester”. You might try contacting the Cody Firearms Museum records office (they have the original Winchester serialization records, and the warehouse ledger records). Serial number 29666 was manufactured November 4th, 1897. If you doubt me, take a close look at both the factory letters shown below.

A quicker way to verify your serial number, if you doubt the dates provided by this website, would be to stop by a gun store or a large box store and browse through the book “The Blue Book of Gun Values” by Fjestad. At the very end you will find a section on serialization of rifles by brand and model. On the 37th edition, page 2464 has the date for Model 1984. It provides a column for the last date of manufacture for both what was originally thought to be the last serial number and the correct date which came from the Polishing Room records at Winchester and were discovered late in the 20th Century.

The blue book has many errors. Bert or the Cody Firearms Museum are your better choices by far!!!!! When I see gun dealers using this book to buy I cringe and I hope the seller doesn’t take the bait.

No doubt but my reply is for a person who is not a collector and is interested in 1 gun only.

A person that is not an educated Winchester collector needs our help. Not a random gun store or large box store to use a book put together to cover all guns and not be very accurate about true market values of any particular gun.
Did this rifle sell? Did we ever get pictures? I’m interested if still available and pictures could be sent to my email [email protected]
