We are seeking a single buyer for my late Grandfathers collection of Winchesters. 92 Rifles and shotguns in total, numerous model 1894’s and model 70’s. All of which have been professionally appraised by Dennis Gayness of Virginia Innovations at the recommendation of the Cody Firearm Museum. The collection will be sold as a single lot and will not be pieced out. For additional information please feel free to email me.

All the best,

Steve

Steve,

The issue you will have selling a whole collection is it eliminates most of the collectors so your going to be left with is dealers who are going to be wanting to pay whole sale prices only so they can turn a profit. Even the serious collector will be thinking the same. I assume the appraiser has valued them at retail which  you will not get if sold as a lot. Winchester have softened in price in recent years for most of the collector guns except for the really high end ones

Good luck with your Grandfathers collection, Bob

Steve,

I agree with Bob.  The only “single” buyer that is going to be interested will be a dealer (not a collector).  Dealers are typically going to offer at best 60% of the appraised value (if the appraisals are accurate).  My recommendation would be for you to contact a couple of the larger auction service companies (Rock Island, Morphy’s, Poulin, Amoskeag to name a few) and have them sell the guns for you in a single auction.  You will realize a higher profit (though still not as much as full retail).

Steve, I have out lived my gun collector friends and had some experience helping the family’s liquidate their collection. I contacted large dealers, Cabela’s at a national level, and several large collectors. Cabela’s was the only place that would take everything, but the best they would do was 60% of retail. That was before the Bass Pro Shop buy out. Large dealers have not had gun shows to sell inventory so I doubt you can find one that would pay 60% of retail. Gun collectors will pay close to retail but are only interested in buying what they collect, not a collection containing guns outside their interest. The last late fiends collection I helped with just finished going thru a series of Rock Island auctions, the guns all sold, the lawyers of the estate are happy, but that was before the China Virus. These were  million dollar plus collections with quality and rarity. The large auction houses will keep 30 plus percent of what the buyer pays. Your best return will be one at a time and take your time! T/R

Steve,

These guy’s are all telling you straight up! They are a 100% correct in my opinion! In all honesty, 92 guns isn’t really a lot of firearms, as far as collections go. I’m not trying to insult you at all! It won’t take long to liquidate them yourself, if you choose, using today’s resources, like they said, will be your highest profit margin!  If you want to do it quick, use the auction houses, like their suggesting, just less profit in your pocket! Good Luck!Confused

Why don’t you post a list of all of the guns?  Pictures would be nice too.
