IMG_4635.JPGImage EnlargerIMG_4633.JPGImage EnlargerI am trying to add a Picatinny rail to a Winchester pre-64 Model 70 300 H&H. I ordered this from EGW and is supposed to fit. But one end of the rail is thicker than the other end. It would seem to be the same on both ends? I will need to do a bit of adjusting with my scope, or should I return this and get another brand? It is supposed to fit my rifle.

Don’t pay attention to the screw holes. I had to remove a Griffin & Howe scope mount

Marplot, that does not look like the correct rail for the Model 70 unless you purchased 10 or 20 additional moa built-in.   For a standard pre-64 70 or magnum action using the front and rear mounting positions (and 0 moa) the height should be the same.

Your rail looks like it has 10 or 20 moa built-in.

EGW offers all three types of rails so I would talk to EGW to make sure they sent you the correct 0 moa mount (unless you actually wanted more moa).

Unless you are making extremely long range shots and/or have a scope with limited elevation adjustment, the 0 moa is the best for typical hunting.  Long range target shooters are the market for the 10 or 20 moa mounts when they max-out the elevation adjustment on their scopes due to the long range.

Best Regards,

P.S. For those not accustomed to abbreviations, moa = minute of angle, EGW = Evolution Gun Works and G&H = Griffin & Howe, which are EXCELLENT old-school scope mounts for quick detachable scopes, they weigh a LOT but still my favorite classic mount.  Smile

Thanks for the response. At first I thought I had the wrong mount, but it is marked a 0 OMA. Though it looks wrong, it is the proper mount. Seems that Model 70 is slightly lower one the mount past the ejection port. Is is right though it looks wrong. Sorry for the inconvenience. Bill

No worries Marplot, it looked wrong to me also.  I thought the pre-64 receiver mounts were the same height.  I use the old Redfield JR mounts on my hunting rifles and really thought they were even on the underside but maybe not?  I still have some in the box I will check later today.

Regardless, if you get your scope mounted and it has plenty of elevation adjustment you are good! Smile

Seems to be working fine. Will take it out to the range and get it zeroed in. Cam out ok, but a bit clunky. Can’t be helped. IMG_4672.jpgImage EnlargerIMG_4676.jpgImage EnlargerIMG_4669.JPGImage Enlarger

Best Regards,

When I ordered the bases for my pre 64 Model 70 the bases are not the same thickness/height.  It had me confused for awhile.  Finally figured it out.  If you look at the bolt on each end you will notice that the front portion of the action is thicker/taller.  So the short one goes here.

Makes sense, The last scope I mounted on a pre-64 Model 70 (.270) was back in ’88 and it is still on it so my memory is a bit rusty.
