I would have expected a ladder rear sight. Can this be correct, vintage 1893? A three leaf rear sight…

Thank you. I had thought all carbines left the factory with a ladder sight. Or, perhaps this is what you are implying. It should have a ladder rear sight unless otherwise annotated in the ledger/factory letter?

Not all SRCs left the factory with the No. 44A Carbine ladder sight… there were a number of them equipped with a Winchester 3-leaf Express sight, but they should all letter as such.

Bert,
Here’s a previous listing for this SRC and it has a factory letter included! And, no mention of the ladder rear sight. Please see attached and scroll to the last photograph.

Sadly, this SRC initially looks good, but has problems that it shouldn’t really have.

The Express sight is not listed in the Factory letter, so the wise assumption would be that it is not original to that SRC.

Help me make sense of the auction dates. There’s two links to Ward auction for this carbine. Both ended on 8/30/24. They ended with very different hammer prices – about $5000 difference. The most recent auction started early August and the other started on February.?
Yes, very different hammer prices. February’s auction was with a reserve and ended at considerably higher than the recent auction with no reserve. It seems odd that these two auctions would have such strikingly different results. I would have thought both sales would have an end hammer price of withinn10% of each other.

Bert, I have 3 SRC M1894’s with the Express sights. A 1903, a 1906, and a 1913. The 03 and 06 have the platinum lines while the 13 has a plain line. Neither of the early carbine letters show an express sight. The 1903 is traceable back to 1903. All 3 carbines do not show any signs of tinkering. Big Larry

None of that changes that fact that a factory original non-standard sight should be listed in the ledger records. While not impossible that it was overlooked by the person writing it into the ledger records, you cannot definitely prove that it was not replaced by a past owner sometime in the past. Sights are absolutely & positively the most frequently changed/altered part on any Winchester rifle or carbine.
The good news is that almost nobody will demerit the value of a Winchester Model 1894 Carbine that has a 100% whole (unbroken) 3-Leaf platinum lined Express sight on it.
