The occasion of this discussion is a good opportunity to mention that I made an error in my article on the Model 53 with regard to the rear sight. Thanks to Big Larry, the next version of that article will contain the corrected sight and elevator numbers. To be specific, the proper rear sight for the Model 53 was the 22C and the elevator was the 1C.

That’s what the Winchester book says, but you have to mike your elevator to see if you have the proper one. or one that is correct for your rifle. They all look alike, but they are not. Changes may have been made over the years and I have not shot either of mine to see if the elevators are correct. Both my rifles, a 44 and a 32, appear to have the correct elevators, but then, the M55’s, of which I have two, have the same sight, but the elevators may be different. I will have to mike them, and they are in the back of my safe. Big Larry

Is it possible the elevators may have been changed as part of the sight-in process before the rifle left the factory?

I’ve not paid attention to the rear sight elevators on my various Model 53’s. I’ve had them in all three calibers and they all looked the same to me, but I did not mic them. On the other hand, in their original ballistics, all three calibers had very similar trajectories, so I would expect them all to have the same rear sight elevator. Having said that, I’ve noticed that my Model 53’s seemed to have variation in the height of the front sight.
Just purchased a 1C thumbprint elevator from E-Bay for a Model 53. Unfortunately, it was too “thick” and would not fit into the slot of the 22C flat top! Did not have a micrometer however, appeared to be right at 4/16″. Assume a 3/-16″ shank is the correct one?
Still in need of a correct elevator.
Thanks.
