This past April, a gentleman stopped by my table at a local gun show and told me about an unusual front sight set up on his Winchester model 94 saddle ring carbine. Well, he sent me pictures of it Friday. The serial number he gave is 8823XX. (I don’t know why people are afraid to give the full number), and it was made in 1919. Here are the pictures he sent me. I responded by telling him that it looks like someone modified a front barrel band and slid it back over the front sight, creating a “hood”. Have any of you seen a front sight set up like this before??

Good Lord, man, you aren’t aware of what the malefactors on the Dark Web could do with that info if they got their hands on it? It’s frightening to contemplate!
I don’t see any solder or braze line to indicate it was made out of two bands joined together; do you?
Thats a barrel band from a rare over under 94.

Well Boys , I have been waiting for 30 years to see one of these on a carbine . Back in about 1989 or thereabouts I was at a gun show in Siracuse NY and found one of these loose on a table and couldn’t resist picking it up . The man I bought it from said his father had taken it off a Winchester when he was a boy . So this is the second one to show up . As in all things Winchester –Never say Never . I just retrieved it from the gun room and will take some pictures and do my best to upload for you.

If you are talking about the barrel band these came on the 66 and early 73 carbines. I’ve never seen on mounted as a hood.
I know the barrel band you speak of with the peak on it for a front sight on the 73 SRCs.
This one has 3 loops, one for barrel, one for mag tube and a third loop over the post & pin front sight of the carbine held with a screw same as the band screw .Bert will post pictures soon .
I have been collecting Model 1894/’94s for many years and I believe this is the third one of these that I have come across. Never actually held one in my hand however. May be more to this story than just a “one-off”. If memory serves, I think it was Don Grove that had one of the others several years ago?

Sorry, you are correct. Short term memory lapse syndrome.

It would be interesting to know what the markings on the but stock of this carbine are related to and may have something to do with the sight hood .

Oliver,
Good point, I asked him about those markings and I’m waiting for an answer from him.
