I got an add for the Malcolm scopes and since ive been looking at them for a long time, I was wondering if it would be possible to mount on a levergun? Precisely my 1886. I dont want to drill the receiver so maybe one that uses the two barrel sight mounts… or maybe im asking to much?

You’re asking for far more aggravation than the results are worth.  A full-length scope mounted by means of the front & rear dovetails is tolerable on a short barreled light weight gun like a Stevens Favorite, but on an ’86, or any other heavy rifle, it’s a huge nuisance. I KNOW! A lesser nuisance, but still not ideal, would be off-set mounts for a short scope, such as Winchester once made, but that would require D&T the brl.–a crime as bad as drilling the rcvr.

Face the facts that Winchester lever-guns are not well suited for scope mounting.

Sounds like the voice of experience here.  I agree with Clarence.  The only exception I would make is if you want something that (might) look cool (vs. something that is functional), I can see the appeal.

Hi Lux in Torrance, Ca. make the reproduction Malcolm scopes.  I don’t believe they have any mounts that do not require drilling and tapping.  They used to sell an offset mount for the 73’s and 76’s but I don’t remember if this was a D&T too?

You need to talk to the 86 collectors.  There might be a way to use the screw already in the left side of the receiver to mount an off set rear elevation set up.  The original Malcolm used one for the 73’s and 76’s.  You would need a machinist to make the device.

It is–I’ve had 3 heavy single-shots with full-length scopes, & while they’re OK for bench-rest shooting, handling them in the field, that is hunting with them, is so aggravating that you’d just have to experience it to fully appreciate the nuisance factor.  Those scopes were mounted on top of the barrel–put one in an offset mounting & you double the nuisance factor.

I have a machinist but I would need a machinist gunsmith and those don’t seem to grow on trees, sadly.

There was a pair of the mounts, no scope, on ebay a long time; eventually sold, probably to someone with a tube that would fit.

It uses the side plate screw and rear sight mount. That would work for me.

That is how the originals were mounted.  I’ve seem other mounts that when mounted don’t do any damage but you have to remove the dust cover.

I’m not sure it would have to be a lot different?  I have never worked on an 86 so I am not sure what the left side screw in the receiver is for?  I know I could look it up but my point is that someone could use this hole and make a setup similar to the one the 73 and 76 would use.

ya im sure it would work with a side screw but someone would need to have the rifle to make a fitting mount.
