I am a fan of tang sights.  I would like to have a tang sight on at least one of my Model 1895’s.  Unfortunately, none of my 1895’s are tapped for a tang sight.  I seem to recall that about one out of ten 1895’s were factory tapped for a tang sight.  I have a fondness for the Marbles Special Base Flexible Tang Sight.  They made one for many of vintage lever rifles.

I recently saw a W12S for a Model 1895 on ebay (link below).  This is the sight for the ’95 Winchester.  I have seen 95’s factory tapped for a tang sight and it seems the hole spacing is much further apart that what I see on the W12S.  It sure looks to me that were this sight fit on a 95’s Winchester tang, at least one hole would have to be tapped through the lettering on the tang?  That doesn’t seem right.  Can anyone shed light on this?

I think the one lower tang screw would hold it in place for as many times as you’d probably ever fire it.  Which wouldn’t be often, I don’t think, if your arms are much longer than a child’s.  On such a bad kicker as a ’95, having the aperture almost touching your eye-ball does not seem wise.

I have the Lyman No. 21 on a few of my 95’s – and that’s a great sight set-up for the ’95.  I’m not saying this sight would work better – and yes, I would have some safety concerns about the future of my eyeball.  It’s the uniqueness that appeals to me.  Special order sights can be the, “icing on the cake.”  Special order sights have a lot of visual appeal to me.  I’m curious if anyone has seen this sight mounted on a ’95?

In 55 years being around Winchesters, I don’t recall ever seeing a ’95 with a proper ” special base ” tang sight, nor have I ever seen a picture of one. However ser#59041 apparently letters with a Marble rear sight and “special base”, Good luck finding one.

Henry – in those 55 years, what do you recall as far as 95’s that were tapped for a tang sight?

I had one with a Lyman tang sight but I’m pretty certain it was an after market add on.
