I recently lost the rear sight from our 348 WCF Winchester Model 71 Serial #25646.

My research indicated the rifle was built in 1947. This rifle was purchased by my grandfather and I would like to replace the sight with original parts. It was suggested that a 22 J or a 22 K with a 1 C elevator would be original parts for this rifle. After reading the 22 K post from December 10, 2021 it made me stop and ponder. As always, the more you learn the less you know. This gun also has a Lyman receiver sight.  It was suggested that I look for the Sight Book by George Madis. That has proven to be difficult. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. We also have a 30-30 WCF Winchester Model 94-30 Serial #1507276 built in 1949 that looks to have s similar sight as the sight lost from the 348.

Would you be able to help me identify the right sight.

Hello Dale,

The serial number on your Model 71 indicates that it was manufactured very late in in the year 1947 (December) or January 1948.  At that time, the standard rear sight was either a 22 K sporting sight with a 1C elevator, or a No. 98A bolt peep sight.  A Lyman No. 56W receiver mounted peep sight was an option.

If you can email pictures of your rifle to me, I can most likely identify which sight your rifle originally had on it.

Bert,

Thank you for the reply and good information and manufactured dates for both rifles.

Yes, the 348 has the Lyman 56 receiver mounted peep sight, do not see the W after the number on the sight. I have photos of the guns and will send them to [email protected] with your permission. If I will try to load the photos on this form.

Good to have someone in the neighborhood to talk with, I am in Seattle.

Dale,

I will look forward to seeing the pictures. If you provide your phone number with the pictures, I can give you a call after reviewing them.

Bert,

We have received the photos of the sight and have been in contact with Ben.

What would be your advice on mounting the sight after we have it in hand? My experience with the technical side of working on rifles and tools is seriously lacking.

Hope you had a good weekend.

Do you have a local gun smith?
