I am looking for a Lyman 6-W for my 1929 manufacture Model 54 1st Standard Rifle and need help identifying the correct sight. I have the dimensions, .440 and .475, for the two folding leaves (Stroebel “Old Gunsights”). However I do not understand where the measurements are taken from and to (from base of sight or leaf to aim point or some other dimension?). I’d appreciate if someone would make an attempt to educate me.
Thanks for your assistance.

Hi Mac-
Not sure of the dimensions, but this is what one looks like on a M54 with factory receiver sight:
Nothing else I’m aware of that looks exactly like it. It’s nothing like the older Lyman 6 or the Lyman 66W (with one fixed leaf) found on the regular M54. Note that the edges of the leaves were nicely checkered.
These also turn up occasionally on early M70 rifles with the 24″ ramped straight taper barrels and factory Lyman 48WJS receiver sights (although these guns usually have a Lyman 12S blank). An example is M70 S/N 14458:
Hope this helps…

Hi Mac-
The Lyman No. 6 (two folding blades) with the one shallow ‘V’ and one flat top blade (neither blade notched like the 6W) seem to show up more often on eBay that the 6W, although the latter does turn up now and again. I do not have a spare one at present (in fact, could actually use another one but am not looking – so no competition from me).
The correct sight for a M54 1st standard rifle w/o receiver sight is the 66W (one fixed and one folding leaf):
Sorry, not the best pic…
Good hunting!!!
Cheers,
Lou
