OfflineI picked up a ‘92 and a ‘94 recently, the 1908 ‘92 had this sight on it. From reading through this forum it seems to be a 1A, D application code. The 1950 ‘94 is d&t on the tang as well but missing a tang sight. Am I correct that the same 1A would be the sight I need as they were in production until 1955? Also in the meantime where can I find a plug screw for the tang? The empty hole is unsightly.

Thanks,
Adam

OfflineWinchester did not drill & tap a 1950 production Model 94 for a tang sight. Winchester stopped drilling & tapping the upper tang for a peep sight in June of 1942. If your Model 94 is D&T, you might want to verify the hole spacing.
6-48 plug screws are available from multiple sources, simply plug “6-48 plug screw” into your favorite search engine (Google, Bing, etc.).

Thanks Bert,
The hole spacing on the’94 does match the sight taken off the’92.
Thanks,
Adam

Are you sure that it is a 1950 production gun? What is the serial number?

Definitely 1950 (latter half of the year).
It also has the side holes for a Lyman receiver mount sight, I was told that wasn’t factory until 1955, so it has plenty of extra holes. I didn’t realize that the ‘92 was factory d&t
It was actually 1952 when Winchester began drilling & tapping the receiver for a Lyman No. 56 sight as a standard feature. It was a special order option beginning in 1936.

The plug screws in the receiver look nice, bubba definitely didn’t do it. I’m familiar with his work on other rifles. He could have done the tang though….

Here is the tang of the 92. I posted the 94 in another thread on sight holes.
The holes on your Model 1892 are factory original. To the best of my knowledge, all of the Model 1892 (92) receiver tangs were drilled & tapped for a tang sight.

Thank you Bert, I’ll get some more pics of this 92 up where appropriate. I’m thinking the tang sight has been there since the factory. The wood has been sanded and the saddle ring cut off. As well as a mail order replacement barrel. Would it be worth it to get a letter?
Thanks,
Adam

Only reason to get a letter would be to verify the original caliber & configuration.

I’m very ignorant, so forgive me. Did Winchester ever install tang sights at the factory? I imagine retailers may have, but I would assume there’s no documentation there

Yes, Winchester did indeed install tang sights… lots of them in fact. If the sight was factory installed, it should be shown on the factory letter.
