Anyone ever seen one of these before? I think it’s quite interesting and wondered who the manufacturer was?
SCARCE MAYBE PROTO TYPE WINCHESTER 1873 OR 1876 RIFLE TANG SIGHT, GUN PARTS | eBay

I would guess it was made by a gunsmith or small manufacture but its not for a 73 or 76. The front hole is larger than the back hole if it was designed to have the pivot towards the front and the 73 had the same size screws for a tang sight and the 76 had the large screw in the back like most other Winchester.

Maybe a proto Lyman from the time before he began making his own bases, selling only the staff to fit factory bases; such a thick base with spring characteristic of early factory bases. Staff itself doesn’t closely resemble Lyman pat drawings, but no reason it should if a prototype.

Thanks Bob. I hadn’t noticed the screw hole sizes. As far as orientation, we would usually assume the staff is positioned toward the receiver, and there’s a pin that probably limits its rotation any further. I do see that the eyepiece is beveled on both sides, if that means anything. I just thought it looked early and interesting enough that if it was truly designed for a Winchester it might be nice to own.

Very nicely finished for a prototype, in my humble opinion.
