Rick,

Are you looking for the long range vernier? I checked the catalogs and the thick base vernier was only made in the long range version until 1886. The October 1886 catalog was the first time the mid range vernier showed up but only in the thin base. Finding the long range vernier is very hard to find let alone buy one.  My brother found one several years ago and paid several thousands for it for a gun that lettered with it.

Rick,

I am going to echo what Bob has stated… finding an original thick base long range vernier tang sight that is in decent condition is an expensive undertaking.  My suggestion is to contact Robert R. Preston and see if he has an extra one that it still unattached.

I have the cased set for the long range vernier and windage front but its missing the vernier. I’ve been looking for many years and haven’t found one yet.

Rick,

I think I found your sight, but unfortunately you would have to buy the gun it’s attached to.

I shoot a 76 in 45-70 It also is missing this elusive L/R Tang sight. I am using the Browning reproduction as was issued with the Browning BPCR 1885. I recently bought a few of these to put on Winchesters to shoot at 300m, because they are discontinued by the American Manufacturer,  AMT. and were really cheap and are quite good functionally. I see things more from a Vintage target shooters aspect, more than a serious collector , and these sights allow me excellent opportunity to shoot accurately. I have the original Base for the 76, and Im not sure if a Browning upright would fit , so that the sight would be a hybrid ? I know Rick and serious collectors would not settle for this, but I am curios whether the addition of the HYbrid would have any positive value or strictly detrimental ? I am also using the Browning sight on the 1885 Schuetzen pictured below, also 92’s 94’s

Phil,

As a collector I would want the original sight on a gun if it lettered with it. I can understand as a shooter, a repo does the same job but it would negatively affect the value. It would be the same as if it didn’t have a sight on it.

I do have an original 76  thick base vernier if your interested? It would fit a nice 75 to 85 percent condition gun? I bought it over 25  years ago for a nice early 2nd model thumb print 1876.
