I periodically scan eBay for sights and found a seller with this tang sight….

In looking at Stroebel’s book, the setup looks OK to me but my experience is very limited in this area. Is this an earlier repro? The seller himself casts doubt on whether it was made by Winchester…so how does one tell the difference between an earlier repro and an original one? The seller also lists another tang sight here…

…but the elevation knob is on the left side as opposed to the rights side like I’m accustomed to seeing.
Thanks – Greg
I don’t know if Winchester ever manufactured tang sights; I would think that they might have contracted out for tang sights, but did not manufacture ‘in-house’. I would classify the sight displayed as a Vernier sight, but don’t know if they are marked as such (doubt that they were), and I don’t know how long Vernier was in existence, if they were even a manufacturer.
The sight does not look right to me. Its been browned and the spring under the base looks cased which I have never seen done on a spring. Its a graduated tang sight not a vernier. I know the seller and he knows his stuff.
As to the 86 sight with the staff knob on the wrong side, if it were to be put on a 86 you would need to turn the base around so the staff is away from the bolt. They used a standard base but the holes in the base are reversed so it can be turned around. I bet that sight would not fold down to good.

Just got home and looked at some of mine and I would say they are repos. The edges of the base are more sharp where the Winchester is more rounded and the location of the spring screw on the Winchester base is right next to the pivot. The slot cutout of the staff on the Winchesters are a nice radius at the top and bottom where this one has a sharp corner along with a radius.
