If a Cody letter for a rifle (say Model 1886) states a Lyman rear sight, and the rifle has a standard sporting sight in the rear and a Lyman tang sight, is the Cody letter referring to that tang sight? I ask because I’ve seen other rear sights specified in a Cody letter (e.g., Leaf) that are the actual rear sights. I don’t recall seeing a Lyman rear sight. The only Lyman sights I’ve seen are front, tang, and receiver sights but I want to clarify just in case.

Thanks – Greg

If it states Lyman rear I would expect to see a Lyman tang sight.

I agree with Bob. On other letters Ive had it simply states the same "Lyman Rear" referring to the tang sight. I have a 92 deluxe that letters as "Lyman Cup Disc sight" and "Lyman Combination Front sight" with no mention of the rear barrel sight.

I also absolutely agree with what Chris has posted. "Lyman Rear " is a tang peep sight.

I handled a 1894 Take Down Rifle a couple of weeks ago. Lyman No.4* front, Winchester three leaf express on barrel and a Lyman 21 on the receiver. I don’t recall seeing any old evidence of a tang sight and the Lyman 21 looked period to me. I had the letter in my hand, gun lettered Lyman front and rear and the letter was recent. I believe the "Lyman front and rear" on a letter could also refer to a receiver sight.

Some other ones I’ve recorded are "Lyman Front, Leaf and Rear" and "Lyman Receiver and Combination Front”.

Brad

*Thought about this today while working a realized I had originally written "Lyman No.5" Supposed to have been "Lyman No.4"

I’m going to have to eat it here. I tracked down this gun and letter again and looked and sure as ___ it says "Lyman Receiver". I apologize for my mistake. I guess my memory is going to ___.

I have a model 1894 with a Lyman 21 receiver sight that looks like it’s been on the riflle from the start. The letter states:

WINCHESTER MODEL 1894 – SERIAL NUMBER 135960
Serial number applied on December 19, 1901
Type: Rifle
Caliber: 32 W.S.
Barrel Type: Octagon
Trigger: Plain
Sights: Lyman hunting front and Lyman rear
Received in warehouse on September 16, 1902
Shipped from warehouse on September 16, 1902, Order number 157021

It doesn’t appear that a tang sight was ever on this gun because there are no marks on the upper tang, and there is some carry wear on the tang as the blueing is slightly worn. Is it possible the letter is referring to the Lyman receiver sight on my gun?

Thanks,

Al

Is there a sight in the rear dovetail?

The 2 that I have with that sight have the following wording.

For s/n 145028 Lyman receiver, hunting front, flat-top sporting rear with line.

for s/n 146566 Lyman hunting front & receiver, flat-top sporting rear.

In both cases, they stated "receiver" but, that may not always be the case. Will have to see what other members have to say.

Paul, there is a Winchester express 3 leaf sight in the rear dovetail that looks original to the gun.
