Hi – I’m a new shooter, (not a collector) and Ipicked up a 52 pre -A and am trying to get information on the correct rear peep to look for. Do the learned gents on this site need photos to help me, or can you guide me without it. So far I know Redfield and Lyman made sights and then it gets a little fuzzy with model numbers. Thanks.

You mean it has no rear sight at all? Most 52s of this era have a wide dovetail cut in the (flat) receiver bridge to accept Winchester’s 82-A rear sight, which you can probably find photos of if you search under eBay’s “sold” listings. Much rarer among 52s from this time period are those with a round receiver bridge, which takes a different sight.
Gosh, I just found one on ebay that’s available NOW for a BIN price of $50! That’s CHEAP!
The standard factory offering for the pre A targets was the 82A as mentioned. Since the pre A’s (except on very rare special orders) were not drilled/tapped on side of receiver for receiver sights, your options are limited. Redfield (model 48J) & Vaver both made a target sight which fits in receiver dovetail. Both of these are excellent sights, but a bit pricey compared to the 82A. They show up on Ebay frequently.
One word of caution on the 82A sights. Make sure they are complete with the dovetail base that go’s into receiver and the 2 windage adjustment screws and detent/tension springs that go over adjustment screws. The sight shown in the earlier post is only the top half. The balance, if can be found, will cost as much as the top part listed. Going price for a complete 82A is $65-$85. Be sure you know exactly what you are buying before you plunk down your $.
