Rear sight on a recently acquired 1894 (SN 268713, ca 1905) in 32-40 was getting in my way when I tried to use the tang sight. As this rifle shows promise in the accuracy arena I’ve decided to press it into service as a test mule for testing loads and fire forming undersized cases. I decided to take a look at my Madis sight book and see if I could identify it. Ummm…maybe. I’m thinking it’s a 22B with a 1A (.205”) elevator. The serrations on the sides bother me a bit, not quite sure how that fits in the time line, Mr. Madis was a bit vague about that.
Figured I’d get y’all’s input before I put it away (in a clearly labeled bag!) in my parts box.

At the end of the 73 production Winchester was putting the 22A on some of them.

The drawing says the Change of Product Notice to eliminate the serrations “checking” on the 22B was in Feb. 1908 so I would take that to mean your 1905 22B sight should have them and your 22B with the 1B elevator is correct for your rifle.

You’re right, Jeff. I mis-read that. I was headed out to run an errand when I posted and should have re-read the thread. As luck would have it, Bob, I’m also working on another 1894 rifle in 32-40 (a couple years older) and it has the 22A rear sight.

Yes, meant to spend more time with the book, post and rifles. Had a machine to tend to, and 40 nice, shiny 32-40 brass to load. Having second thoughts about my “test mule” idea; my repeaters require a cartridge .015” shorter than what I feel may be optimum OAL for my Single Shot. I suppose I need to go over all this again before I put these rifles up. Great opportunity.
