Rear sight on a recently acquired 1894 (SN 268713, ca 1905) in 32-40 was getting in my way when I tried to use the tang sight. As this rifle shows promise in the accuracy arena I’ve decided to press it into service as a test mule for testing loads and fire forming undersized cases. I decided to take a look at my Madis sight book and see if I could identify it. Ummm…maybe. I’m thinking it’s a 22B with a 1A (.205”) elevator. The serrations on the sides bother me a bit, not quite sure how that fits in the time line, Mr. Madis was a bit vague about that.
Figured I’d get y’all’s input before I put it away (in a clearly labeled bag!) in my parts box.

At the end of the 73 production Winchester was putting the 22A on some of them.

Hi Mike,
I thought you read this thread – https://winchestercollector.org/forum/winchester-sights/1894-rear-sight-letter-designation/
The drawing says the Change of Product Notice to eliminate the serrations “checking” on the 22B was in Feb. 1908 so I would take that to mean your 1905 22B sight should have them and your 22B with the 1B elevator is correct for your rifle.

You’re right, Jeff. I mis-read that. I was headed out to run an errand when I posted and should have re-read the thread. As luck would have it, Bob, I’m also working on another 1894 rifle in 32-40 (a couple years older) and it has the 22A rear sight.

Yes, meant to spend more time with the book, post and rifles. Had a machine to tend to, and 40 nice, shiny 32-40 brass to load. Having second thoughts about my “test mule” idea; my repeaters require a cartridge .015” shorter than what I feel may be optimum OAL for my Single Shot. I suppose I need to go over all this again before I put these rifles up. Great opportunity.
Thanks!
Mike
