I just purchased a 94 with shotgun butt, half round extra length barrel (28″) with 2 rear sight dovetails cut in the top of the Octagon portion of the barrel. Did this rifle potentially have an optic installed at one time?

Can you post photos? I would be interested to see close-up photos of the machining marks in the dovetails.

I pick it up tomorrow. I will take pics then. This is the only one I have at the moment.

Looks like you’re rifle was mfg. in 1902.
I like the configuration of it. Can’t wait to see more detailed pictures, when you get it.

That’s a scarce 94, as they didn’t offer longer then standard barrels in 30cal. in catalogs, only the 32-40 and 38-55. We know, never say never with Winchester

March 1902, and the first thing you should do it contact the CFM records office and obtain a factory letter for it.
Based on the date of manufactured, it is highly unlikely that it Winchester cut the extra dovetail slot for a scope.
I have seen a handful of 30 WCF rifles with extra length barrels (most common is 30-inch).
