I took my 1892 out today for the first time since I got it. It is a 25-20. It has the buck horn sight with the set screw in it that holds that thin plate. I have the set screw out. Now how do you adjust the center plate? I need to move it down. Do you just tap on it down or do you tap it so it comes out completely. I have not done anything to it yet. I want to check first so I do not mess anything up on this rear sight.
Steve
Steve,
The plate is dovetailed in and could be rusted in place. I would soak it with a penetrant before trying to move it and use a wood or fiber drift to tap it. You might ant to remove the sight from the gun to do this.

Thanks Bob, Will put some PB blaster on it. I took the rifle out today for the first time since I got it. I was surprised it was shooting high. I lowered the thumb elevator all the way down and it was still shooting high. Now this was at like 35 yds. I wanted to get on paper before I started adjusting things.
Steve
Steve,
You are correct. Without seeing the sights my guess is your front sight is too short.

Steve,
According to my chart you need a front sight that is .360″ tall including the dovetail.

Steve,
That is a Lyman #4 (hunting front sight) Those came in different heights but they were mainly put on the Winchester 86’s. Originally a Winchester 92 came with the Winchester 21 sight. You can find sights on Ebay all the time but trying to find a good one is hard. The early 21’s were made without the set screw and the later ones had the screw. Here is the 21 front sight I found on Ebay, It looks like these could be repo sights. What year is your Gun?

Steve,
You would have the one with the screw.

That # 21 sight with .360″ height seems about right. The 2 sights recommended on eBay would be right but that seller is notoriously high on his prices. Those sights come up pretty regularly and replicas are also available from homesteadparts.com. for around $65. Here’s one but it has file marks on the sides: http://www.ebay.com/itm/EARLY-WINCHESTER-SERIES-21-FRONT-SIGHT-with-SCREW-MODEL-1873-76-86-92-94-/401317568934?hash=item5d706421a6:g:tVwAAOSwCU1Y3XaB.

Yes when I saw that $125 I thought OUCH !! The thing is I will need a new front sight if I am going to enjoy shooting the rifle, which BTW it was a blast to shoot yesterday. Heck it is quieter than a .22 mag. Perhaps I can recoup something from the Lyman one I have. At least with all of you guys here helping I know what to look for now. Greatly appreciated
Steve
Steve,
Here is one that just showed up on Ebay. You might want to get better pictures and ask for a height measurement.

I checked the Homestead site and their reproduction ones are .350 & .375 heights. I am thinking if I do go that rout the .350 might be a better choice. I am still looking for an original one though and I should be able to find one.
After lowering the blade on the rear sight I shot yesterday and it did come down quite a bit. It was not a good test yet as I was shooting offhand and the wind was awful. I will bench rest it this weekend and see just where I am. I sure like the way the 25-20 shoots.
Steve
I see someone scarfed that sight up on Ebay already. I figured for the price it wouldn’t last long.
