I just purchased a model 1873 rifle that is missing the rear sight.  A Marbles tang sight is presently on the rifle.  I would like to go back to what would be the appropriate sight for this 32-20 made in 1892.  I have searched on line to no avail.   If I order a new sight from Marbles, I will need to know the measurement of the dovetail.  Any help is greatly appreciated on what direction to take.

Thank you

Winchester had only one dovetail width which is 3/8″. The most common tang sight on Winchesters is the Lyman tang sight so for a 73 it would have a “W” code on it. The rear barrel sight is the called the Sporting Rear and would be the one with the screw and thin slide adjustment for adjusting the point blank elevation.

Thank you!  Where can I purchase the correct rear barrel sight?  Should I go for original or an aftermarket from Marbles?  If they even sell them.

Dismiss THAT from your mind–it would be an offensive eyesore! And if the Marbles tang sight you mentioned is one of the new ones, that too is an eyesore on any vintage rifle.

You’ll most easily find an original on ebay, unless someone here has an extra one to sell you.

I would go with the Winchester sight rather than Marbles. Ebay is the best place to find them.

First time I’ve ever seen an ebay seller use “well worn” in their description!  Mark him down as a rare straight-talker.
