I have a Model 12 16 gauge that has a “W” stamped on the lower receiver just forward of the carrier port, just aft of the magazine access / barrel lock up.

Just curious what this might mean. I’ve checked old books, collectors sources, internet…no joy.

Any ideas ? Thanks

The “W” stamp on the receiver frame was a quality control test of the new Dulite bluing formula that Winchester had adopted.  Winchester used the “W” stamp for a 24-month time period beginning in February 1939.  It was used on many different models, both rifles and shotguns.
