I have a Winchester Defender 20 gauge shotgun that I’m trying to find an owner’s manual and spec sheet for. I’m having a hard time pinning this down to a specific Model number as it is only marked on the barrel as “Winchester Defender 20 Gauge 2 3/4” & 3”. The serial number is L2638856.
I believe what you have is a Model 1300 Defender. I had one in 12 gauge that was marked as yours is. The Model 1200 Riot and Defender that I currently have are marked 2 3/4 inch chambers only. I think I have the catalogs that list the 20 gauge Defenders. If I can find them, maybe I can scan the pages and send them to you. Would love to have a 1200 Defender in a twenty, but have never seen one other than the catalogs. By the way, steel shot should not be a problem. But if it were mine and in nice shape as a collectable, I would find another gun to hunt with.

You need to find out what the choke is too. If the barrel is choked and not for steel you will ring the barrel where the choke starts. Most guns made in the last 5 to 10 years are probably safe for steel, maybe. Most shotguns used for bird hunting have at least a 26″ barrel. Not to say you just can’t use a 20″.
