Just picked this 12ga 97 up over the weekend. Has a 26″ barrel, marked CYL. Straight checkered stock and matching forearm. Serial number 1001XX.

Is this indeed a deluxe brush gun? Are there any good sources of information out there on variations of the 1897? Any estimations of value on this shotgun in particular?

Thanks!

Without giving the 97 experts the entire serial number you will never know.

I too was curious about that gun.  It will be interesting to see the responses.

The partial serial number you mention marks it a “C” series gun, but the slide handle & bar appear to be from an “D” series (or later) gun.  Can you post a clear picture showing the stamped marking on the left side of the slide bar ?

The full serial number is indeed C 100129 (forgot to include the prefix in the rush to post this morning).

Below is a picture of the slide bar:

Something is definitely a bit fishy… the slide bar itself is correct as it has the expected Type-1 marking, but the slide handle stock does not have the 3-screws attaching it to the slide bar.

I recommend that you contact the Cody Firearms Museum records office and obtain a factory letter for this gun.

I am most certainly very curious what the ledger records have to say about this serial number!

Wow! I’d love to shoot a round of skeet with this old shotgun. I know at least one oldtimer who’d want to borrow it and could probably put on a pretty good show.

Wood looks something like what you would see on the black diamond trap guns.

Yes identical checkering to my “Trap Gun” but without the black diamond insert.
