Well, I promised in another thread I’d share some pics of a newly acquired Model 40 I picked up. I like the oddities and this qualifies, the model 40 has a quirky story and since they’re disappearing I figure, thought I’d grab one at a reasonable price.
There’s a couple good youtube videos on the 40, but not much else. Mark Novak’s excellent teardown video and another more general one. Took it apart, removed the varnish and re-oiled the woods, put her back together and I think she’d shoot just fine. The butt has a few very small cracks forming around the receiver as was this model’s achilles heel, but still solid, you can’t pull them apart to glue so I left alone…enjoy some pics since I haven’t started a new thread in some time! (not sure why they invert and flip themselves…sorry)

A through-bolt stock attachment was supposed to be more advanced engineering than “old-fashioned” tangs, but the same method was used on Marlin Ballards, & their stocks, too, are often cracked in the same place. The idea was that the bolt made the stock-rcvr union more rigid than was possible with tangs. Maybe Browning knew what he was doing in designing long tangs for the A5?

He was probably on to something. You really have to crank on that through bolt to take up any slack and prevent movement, felt wrong doing it and there’s no way it doesn’t contribute to the sensitivity of that area!

Maybe we should shoot a few shells through it next time we get the chance, I mean, gotta make sure it works, right? I owe you a box anyways….
If you and Mike take that thing out and shoot it without me, I will rent a billboard and say bad things about your mothers.

I suppose I could be persuaded to slip over to where I cached those shotguns, pretty sure most of my other shotgun gear and ammo is still accessible. Won’t need many shells, too hot for old folks to be getting angry at clay birds. Looks like we’ll need to slip over to the trap field since the guest of honor apparently has a full choke.

Zeb, probably wouldn’t be the worst thing ever posted up publicly about me
Mike, we just need to go to the section where all my clays will land softly since 90% of them will be whole when they land…..you know, environmentally friendly recycling and all…
That section won’t exist until we get a good rain, Jeremy. Maybe September? One game sometimes played on a Trap field is for the shooter following you to shoot a missed bird or big pieces following a hit. A full choke is helpful for the second shooter. Since your 40 probably still has a full choke there won’t be any big pieces after a good hit. And no, I’m not very good at that game!
